Today, I put together a 5' x 5' raised bed that is 16 inches deep. That's 33.25 cubic feet of area that I need to get topsoil and compost to fill. I could go the bagged route, but that's going to be very pricy. I could go the route of going to a nearby nursery and getting a truck bed full of dirt, but some people don't like filling their truck beds with dirt...especially when said dirt is going to be put into it by a backhoe. Ugh, I really want to do some gardening this summer, but getting it ready is such a fucking pain in the ass. At the house I lived in with my ex, we had four raised beds and I loved dealing with them. We had some good years with those beds and saw some great vegetables grown. I think with this bed, I mainly want to focus on herbs like rosemary, basil, and maybe some garlic thrown in there. There's plenty of room to grow things. The good thing about rosemary is that it is a hardy plant and can survive winters. Basil grows very well but as soon as it gets cold, it starts dying. I want to grow the rosemary so that I can transplant it later around a tree in our front yard as hedges. It's also an herb that fights mosquitoes. They don't like the pungent smell. Living close to a lake provides wet areas for them to breed and they stay around our neighborhood. Let's get this big bitch filled with dirt and then we can worry about plants afterward.
